American Government 3/24

In Class - Begin watching the documentary "The US vs. John Lennon." In this documentary, the focus will be on how the government, especially the office of the President (Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon) has changed throughout the war. We will take these changes and focus on how these executive powers are similar to today's war in Iraq.

American Government 3/20

In Class - Evaluate and critique 16 different children's books (choose any 16). Complete evaluation handout. If you were absent yesterday, or did not turn one in for any reason, you are still required to complete the evaluation. TAKE YOUR TIME! DO THIS RIGHT! Failure to take the time to thoughtfully coimplete these evaluations will affect your grade.

World History 3/20

In Class - Complete handout: World War II: Foreign Policy Prior to the War (Chapter 14, Section 1). On the back of the handout, complete the chart: Country/Region - Importance (Chapter 14, Section 1/2). Answer the five questions on a separate sheet of paper. This is due before you leave.

Topics covered: Treaty of Versailles, Roaring Twenties, Jazz Age, Harlem Renaissance, Prohibition (18th Amendment), Bootleggers, Speakeasy, Women's Suffrage (19th Amendment), Flappers, Advertising, Automobile (and the industries created in response). Short video discussing the 1920's and the role it played in the United States.

In Class - We will be going to the library to do some research about the state, local, and federal governments during Hurricane Katrina. The handout will be due on Friday. Also, I handed out a packet with some interesting statistics from Hurricane Katrina. The very last page is an article that needs to be completed (Double Journal Entry) and due on Friday as well.

Homework - Question of the week due by Friday. Continue to prepare for the class discussion on Friday regarding race relations in this country. Due on Friday: Article summaries (2) from articles on race relations; talking points paragraphs (4); library handout; double journal entry. Also, you will need to participate in the discussion on Friday (50 points) in order to receive credit.

American Government 3/3

In Class - Continue watching "When the Levees Broke." Continue to take notes concerning issues of racism that you see throughout the documentary. The class discussion has been moved to Friday. Tomorrow we will spend doing some research concerning the roles of the federal and local governments prior to, during, and after Hurricane Katrina.

Homework - On Friday, you will turn in: article summaries (2) concerning race relations in the United States including your four paragraphs of talking points that you will use during the discussion on Friday.

NOTE - This is a big assignment worth at least 120 points (50 for the discussion). Come prepared to participate and work. This is the last big assignment before grades go out next week!

World History 3/3

In Class - Discuss page 381, #2-6 (homework from yesterday concerning the Russian Revolution). Begin watching George Orwell's "Animal Farm." See how the movie closely relates to the people and events of the Russian Revolution in 1917 (handout movie/revolution character list).

Homework - None.

EXTRA CREDIT - watch the following documentary (approximately 45 minutes in length) concerning the Mayan Doomsday Prophecy. After watching this documentary, you will write a one page reaction to the film. Tell me what you learned, what you thought was interesting, and whether or not you believe in this prophecy. You are then to find three (3) articles concerning the Mayan Doomsday Prophecy. You will need to summarize the articles (minimum of 1/2 page) and then compare and contrast the three articles. Overall, you will be writing at least 3 pages. You will turn in your one page reaction, three (3) article summaries (1/2 page in length) with articles, and your comparison/contrast of the articles (minimum 1/2 page in length).

This assignment is due to me no later than Monday, March 9 by 3:00 pm. Late work will not be accepted. Completion of this extra credit assignment is worth 60 points.
