Question of the Week - Take a look at the following picture gallery:
http://www.time.com/time/photogallery/0,29307,1922169,00.html
The pictures themselves come from the Tea Party Protests concerning the issues raised by the Obama Administration. In your views, do you think protests, such as these, are helping or hurting the American debate on health care and other issues? What are your thoughts and opinions?

Be sure that you proofread and make logical arguments based on the pictures. Furthermore, do your own work. Plaigarised material will result in a zero!

Now it's okay to protest something that you are against, but it's not okay to go out of hand. The pictures from Time Magazine show very- in a sense- gruesome and painful images of a nation being torn apart. Picture #2, for example, shows someone holding a sign that says: "Communist[s] now call themselves Democrats. Image #5 shows a man who has a sign that says "Obama bin Lyin," a pun off of Osama bin Laden. #9 shows a young boy with a sign that says, "You lie." Though it is right for these people to have a fair say in the healthcare debate, it is wrong to hurl insults at the president for what he wants to do. Hurling insults at the president only makes the problem worse because it only contributes to more arguing. The president needs to know the other viewpoint in a fairer manner. He does not need to find out what the other side is the wrong way. Currently, America needs more uniting, and much less dividing.

I think it's HURTING obama's healthcare plan. People like these have the mentality that by getting rid of the healthcare and protesting, they are doing the right thing. But, they are mainly forgetting the rest of their country in the process with this type of protesting. Along with that, the protesting is a bit...extreme. I think when our right to protest comes to this, it has to have some limit. All in all, protesters are hurting the healthcare plan and obama's name.

I feel that the pictures taken at the Tea Party are hurting the administration. I think its sad that America wont even let the president do his job by helping fix America, nor give him a chance. I also find it funny that some of the protesters are young peoplewho probally dont even know why there out there. I bet that a little more that half of those people have no idea of what their even protesting aganist. In one of the pictures a woman was holding a sign that said "I trust in god not govt." SO there for she might belive in fate. SO how does she or any on eles know that Obama might be in office for a reason. Aother man was holding a sign that said Impeachment now" why impeachment so soon? He didnt even get a chance to do his job. I think that OLDER America is just scared for some reason. I find it okay that Omama wants to be that persident who wants to help YOUNGER America for a change. so to all those little protesters ot there...let the PRESIDENT do his job and give him a chance for change =}.

It looks like alot of people hate Obama because of everything that he has tried to do. It seems that the health care he is trying to set up for everyone is not working out for anyone. I think that some of the signs were messed up but i also think that some can be true. Like the sign that was calling democrats communists was pretty messed up. The one that is talking about the second amendment was a good sign. I do believe in freedom of speech but to just say that the government is just like communists and czars was wrong. I know its how they think of Obama but its just not right to call him a communist. I think that it sucks for Obama because he got so much crap for trying to fix what was destroyed before he became president. The same thing happened to President Hoover.

"Obama bin lyin'". The issue of race has been discussed very frequently as of late, and comments like this just add to the inflammation of it all. To criticize your 'parasite in chief' is one thing, yet evoking rude and insulting nicknames based on premises of race and outrageous exaggerations is just not acceptable. It has commonly been said that when logic and argument fail, people turn to insults to fight their battles. Immature. To have an opinion is fine, and even encouraged in this great nation, but to take advantage of that right and create these problem-causing thorns in the side of every politician is an assault in itself. Maybe they just don't realize it, but the stress they cause must be insurmountable to any one person, yet they keep shoving it on Obama, when they could just as easily debate calmly and effectively. So when you ask if these signs and sayings help or hurt debates, I believe that it does more than just hurt relations between the opposing sides; it creates unnecessary conflict and damages what little relations our leaders work so tirelessly to achieve. Working together has always been an incredibly difficult task, and gaining any headway has been historically proven to be nearly impossible on topics of this magnitude. Then you have people working around the clock to obliterate teamwork by heedlessly insulting and damaging our leaders', their images, and what they believe to be the right direction for this country. These people need to stop, these people need to learn to stop feeding the fire that is division in a time when unity is most needed in the 'United' States of America.

These protests, i believe, are not helping on the issue of health care or anything else. These protests are not going to teach senate or obama a lesson and change their minds about how laws should be. An issue, such as healthcare, is not going to change just because a crowd of people do not agree with the way it works. There is no point in judging obamas idea of a good plann because his decisions stand. Sure i dont agree fully that we should be focusing on health care as much as we are but i cant change that we are. The picture of the man holding the sign that says liar liar liar i am curious as to what that means. i know obama is not lying about anything so i dont see why that poster is on display.

xX[Nick Ibarra]Xx P.4 said...

obama is not a liar! His plan is good and i do not think obama is lying about anything. The protests that people are having over this is just a big scandal in my opinion. Joe Wilson talked out against obama and called him a liar. He aplogized for saying this and interrupting him in the middle of his speech. Wilson was just at the wrong place at the wrong time. Also, Obama isnt lying about fighting for health care because it is one of his big goals. Another reason why i dont think that he is lying is because it was Ted Kennedy's dream to have a universal health care system. Obama wants his goal and Ted's dream to happen even though Ted Kennedy will not live to see it.

I dont really think the protests are helping the debates. It just shows how rude people are and how much disrespect they have for Obama. Hes trying his best to help with the Heath care issues. Its perfectly okay for people to protest things, but i dont think its right to insult the president for what he wants to do. I agree with some of the other students that the insults and the protests are in a way hurting the country, and are making things worse. Obama just wants to fulfill Ted Kennedys dream of a universal healthcare. I think we should atleast give him a chance.

i think that people have the right to people have the right to protest but once they cross the line and start calling them terrorist such as the photo #5 then their voice shouldnt be paid the attention that it would deserve if it was a peaceful and uninsulting image. Picture nine shows a boy holding a poster that says you lie. ask the kid if he knows exactly what the protest or that phrase is exactly about. he wont tell you something creditable, why? because he is easly being influenced by what other ignorant that is going around saying things about the presidents presidency. kids are sometimes used by the adults in protests because when someone else see's a kid holding up signs that say something people say wow you see that kid he is being affected by the plans that the president is doing, because people pay attention to what the kids do, even though they are being fooled by the ignorance of others. picture 5 shows a men holding a sign that is relating the president to a terrorist which to me is not a form of protest but it is very insulting, you dont see terrorist trying to better a country but to destroy it. the president looks to heal the country, he is always trying to come up with better systems to help the people and if some people cant aprreciate what he is doing then i saw go live some where else where the government doesnt give a care about the people.
why should Obama stop his plans on healthcare? i think that he is offering people better help and if the public option is still running then i say go for it. people should have a great system where they know they will have good care and wont be afriad to go and get help. picture 10 is saying that she doesnt believe in gov. who is saying that people should follow gov all the way and put it before god, the gov. is another source of trying to keep peace and help the people not go against.

I feel that it is hurting the Obama administration. I mean in slide number 2 they have a picture numerous signs being held with strong opinions such as "Communist now call themselves Democrats." It is also hurting him because not only don't some people agree with him, they want him Impeached. like in slide number 5 a man holds a sign that says "Obama Bin Lyin'..." I feel that they are not helping the health care problem at all. Instead, they are just hurting it.

I think that these protests are not helping the healthcare issue and also other issues. These protests will most likely cause more problems than what there already are. Protesting will not solve anything or make Obama change his mind. Obama is very determined to pass this healthcare reform bill and Im sure nothing is going to stop him. Some people think that the republican is racist for calling Obama a lier during his speech. In one of the pictures i saw a boy with a poster saying "you lie." To me it seems like people are following him. I think that most people expect the worst of Obama and are starting to lose hope in him.

Trever Strand said...

The photographs from the Texas Tea-Party protests are a perfect example of the double standards evident in today's society. People view these signs and are quick to pass judgment calling the protesters racist. However, mere years ago people waved signs eerily similar depicting Bush in a similar sense yet nobody seemed to care then. Now I do not believe these signs are neither hurting nor helping the debate on healthcare for either side. They are merely distracting attention from the real discussion topic. They may however give the Democrats ammunition to discredit the Republican arguments claiming that they only oppose the bill because they are racist. This may be true for some of the opposition but not all. Some Democrats are intentionally bringing up the issue of racism in an attempt to shut down the Republican protesters.

In my own view, I think that these kinds of protests are in a way helping the American debate on health care. It is because of these people who assemble and speak their thoughts in public that the President can be aware of what the people of the United States are thinking and feeling. This way he is able to clear up any misinterpretations that the public might hold concerning topics that he is currently addressing. If there are people who are just being ignorant, it can possibly hurt the American debate, on any issue. You never know what a person’s true intentions are, so if they are protesting for what they think is protecting their right to freedom of speech, let them be. They are fighting, hopefully, for what they think is right, and not just to cause confusion in the American debates. If we were to ever be in a position where we feel there is a need to protest, then we as well would want to have the same opportunity that these Tea-Party protestors have now. I don’t think that it is right to accuse someone unfairly, without good reason to do it. During the Presidential elections, so many people had put major hope in President Obama bringing about “CHANGE” to renew the United States, and I thought that was pretty vain. In the last picture, there is a woman holding up a sign that reads, “My hope is in God not govt”, and though it does not mention the health care, immigration, economic, or any other reform issue that is heard of constantly, it reminds us of what I think this country has forgotten. I believe that we should remember what it says in the Bible, in Isaiah 2:22, “Stop trusting in man, who has but a breath in his nostrils. Of what account is he?” I think this is part of the reason why President Obama is being criticized and accused falsely. We, the people of the United States, put our “HOPE” in him, expecting a transformation in the status of our country to come by, just like that. On top of that, we are disappointed with him because it has not been done. We can’t fix our country by ourselves, that’s what I honestly think.

Protesting is okay but when u go out of hand it becomes a totalyy different issue. The pics on time magazine were just outrageous but at the same time showed peoples opinions but show your opinions in a civilized manor. For example pic#1 has a picture of obama and it says lie lie lie which is okay but yet obmama has yet to lie to us or has yet been caught lying to us. Pic#2 says communist are democrats no commist are communist democrats are democrats. Why are people tryin to impeach obama when he hasn't been in office a year yet give the man a chance before u got bashing him.Why are people bashing him if u wanna bash somebody bash the whole govt not just one guy. Obama is tryin it may not seem like it but he is so get off his back about it. why is there a sign saying set our children free, when there children have always been free. Please stop making obama your scapegoat and just give the man a chance. Our country is dividing while we should be uniting.

Some people at these protests are making some valid points, but also some of them are just being ignorant. The ones that are yelling things like 'Our democrats are communists' are not helping anybody. These people are just telling lies. I am not saying that I agree with everything our government does, but I highly doubt that our government is going to take over the country. That is ridiculous! Protesters that are saying that our government is corrupt are not moving our country forward. They are actually keeping us back by keeping these arguments up. If these people want to help our country, they need to state their ideas that could possibly add to health care reform or other issues. But as of now, they can take their idiotic insults back home because our government is not full of communists and our president is not the joker. We need enlightened individuals with good ideas, not ignorant morons with false statements.

Well,In my opinion i dont think its helping. Its just making the problems grow.Theres no point to protest because not all people get heard. So might as well wait and see what happens, and then if you dont agree then speak as freely. All people are doing is hurting the concept of the whole Health Care Debate.People are making a big deal out of it, its barely the begining let it process. The signs that were concerning the president is just plain sad.Meaning, reading the ones that said that he was a liar. You know give him a break, hes trying his best.Shoot Try to image yourself trying to satify many people at one time.

Well in my view all this protesting is just going to help obama. The reason for this is because the more people dont believe in him the more he will want to show them he can and that he is capable of making his plan work. Then again it is hurting because not that many people wil be willing to cope with it. About the pictures i think people are not even giving him a chance to do his work the way he wants it .Obama may be a lier to others and only making it" worse " but it doesnt take a day to make a billon problems go away and a billion people satisfied. My thoughts are that people sometimes just over react. They should give him space and let him fully explain. The whole "you lied" from republican joe wilson was just wow . Since that people are calling obama a lier. witch is dumb what if the people misunderstood about the immigrants gettimg health covrage? but no right away the scandale starts people these days haha. Those are my thoughts and honestly people can get outa hand and im not saying not to go out on what you believe but just chill a bit .people now go all out and be mean .Think about it what if you were obama or the president its not that easy to do evrything correct hes human he makes mistakes .

I think that these types of protest are only hurting the debate, they are not only hurting the debate they are making it more complicated then it already is, as well as drawing more negative attention to it. Yes, ofcourse it is okay to protest and get your opinions out there, but doing it in such negative terms will not get us anywhere. Accusing Obama of being a liar and of being a communist or comparing him to Osama bin Laden, in my opinion has no relevance to the healthcare debate, i believe we have bigger issues then the opinion people have of Obama. I think if they aregoing to protest about the healthcare debate then they need to protest about that, and their opinions and ideas, not about communism and lying. Therefore, i believe that this is only hurting the healthcare debate because the protests aren't even relating to what people want healthcare to become, only their low blows to Obama.

Tyler said...

I feel that everyone is allowed to express their own opinions. And that this does in a way affect health care. By these protest peoples views about health care and Obama will most likely change. Plus this may help Obama try and push health care even more. Even though most those people dont want him to cause it will be harsh against older people.

Protest is healthy in any society for the fact that we are not robots and we were not made to agree on everything. Protest such as these can help and hurt the debate for national health care. On one side we see people with signs displaying "Obama Bin Lyin'" and "You lie" these signs are hurting health cares chances and giving people the wrong image. Some people who maybe don't know the bill all that well but see these negative signs may jump to the conclusion that health care is bad for our country. However protests like these also show the fears the citizens have about what health care will do, such as one sign that read "Save granny defeat Obamacare." Many have fears like ones that health care will create a death penalty for seniors citizens. Arguments such as these show our government the fears of their people and allow them to address it and tell the people the truth about the plan. So in truth it can be argued that protest such as this helps and hurts our nation but i believe the greater affect would be that it hurts health care reforms. The government cannot succeed if it is not supported by the larger percent of its own citizens.

Well here's what I think. As I read other peoples answers to this question I see 2 sides: one being no, these protests aren't helping and two, they are. I see where people are coming from and Id have to say both sides have some good arguments.

Ok, yes I agree and feel that some protesters were indeed going overboard with putting insults on the signs. It really really disappointed me to see that. I'll be honest and say I couldn't help but judge the protesters and put them all into one category with the title of 'Blind disrespectful Obama haters'. I feel bad that President Obama has these types of reactions in pretty much everything he does and in a way my own people are embarrassing me. They're making us all look bad. Us meaning the people of America.

Now on the other hand I can see how these protests help because they say what the public wants and could help with figuring out a plan. But then again everyone has a different opinion. Basically I just wish everyone could see things on the same page and see that our country isn't going to be successful if we keep up with this division. I thought we were the UNITED States Of America...

As i looked through these pictures from Time Magazine and Texas Tea Party, they all seem to protest against Obama in his way of health care reform and seems that some of the pictures are to be about racism.I understand that many people can protest about anything they wish for, but in this case people are getting out of line. By having these protests emerge, it really isn't helping out Obama's plan at all. Many people seem to be very against Obama do to his efforts in his presidency, where people don't seem to agree upon. There also seems to be many young people in the pictures that i guess are just protesting because maybe their parents are forcing them just so that other people and the press can see that they are involved in this as well. so to finish it off we should all just come into group and try to atleast help out the president in his efforts on helping everyone and not just try to pick out a fight agaisnt him.

This question is a very touchy issue. THe Tea Part Protests are hilarious, the mudslinging that goes on and the genius picket board ideas is amazing. THe fact that these Americans, are so dedicated for what they beleive in is surprising. It is understood that it is our right to assemble, and our right to free speech, but there needs to be a moral line that shouldn't be crossed when it comes to debates like this. Race and anything racial should be left out.

Race is a HUGE topic, no matter what arguement there is, race can be asscoiated with the problem. The problem we see with this is an overall sidetrack from the main topic at hand. For example, Obama calling a peace officer stupid was not a good call on his part. The race issue was that the "white" cop, arrested a "black" man. When people think of this, some think of Rodney King and others think of generalzations provided by biased media or false misrepresentaions in movies or tv. The arguement about the Officer arresting the man was simply because he was black. The Officer did his job. He was called out because of a man trying to gain accsess into a house forcefully, usually a burglary or home invasion robbery. THe Officer spotted the "Ethics Professor" and contacted him to gain his side of the story. HOwever, the professor did struggle and resist with the officer while investigating the crime at hand. As seen in the example above, race over rided a simple miscommunication.

Imagine what this can do for healthcare and future issues. We will be bacl to the 1960's will unfortunately have to deal with the same problems.

PALO: I am dead tired. I will tell you the story when I come in.

In my opinion, I think these signs in fact hurt the health care issue. This is because these signs show that the health issue is more than just wanting to help the people to get health insurance. The fact is that the signs show that the democrats seem to be communist in several protestors mind. The use of such signs show that a powerful nation is being torn apart because of several protestors, who are against health care, got out of hand. Obama has been compared to Hitler as well as Osama Bin Laden. These extreme forms of comparison to such leaders has only hurt the country into more arguements. Even though Obama has faced such problems, he has so far been strong enough to still want to pursue reform. The Obama has been able to deal with such aligations is by knowing his history. In my thoughts, even though these signs do hurt reform, it will motivate Obama into proving his point. That is that reform is necessary, just like several other presidents believed in before, and made such an impact on have the nation, making it much better.

I think that protesting is alright because you are fighting for what you believe in, but when you start being very inappropriate about certain situations, its not right. all people should show a little respect and show a little class instead of calling the president or drawing meaningless pictures of him because it shows how childish you can be. Calling obama " Obama Bin Lyin" is uncalled for, this situation should be dressed in a controlled matter and not attack the president with insults. America should see that obama is trying his best to give us a better economy, bcause if us the people were in obamas shoes then they would feel the pressure.

I feel that people dont have a right to say but remember we are the people that voted him in the office, its hard to be president but people dont get it at all. i feel that the person that was putting up the sign
saying "obama biy lying" i feel that they went past the line and should regret putting that because of the issue we have right now in the usa.

Wow. I look at these images and im very shocked to see how uneducated people are. I mean i understand people don't like the fact that our president is African American but they don't have to be all rude about it. And the worst part, they drag their children into it. What do children have to do wiht this? So...no i don't think people that protest are helping the American debate n healthcare. Did they not hear his speech? I don't think Obama deserves insults like that. He is NOT a liar or by near associated with Bin Ladden!

From the picture's ive seen in the slideshow many people have a lot of things to say. Do i personally think that its helping it. In a way depends on what there saying. The things they say could influence other people to do bad things. If the people doing bad things do to harm and not make a good change thats when I think they cross the line. Many people are out there saying that Obama's health care system is gonna kill there grandmothers but is that necessarily true? I don't think so. When people are out there saying stuff like that, thats when its starts doing more bad than its doing good. When people are out there protesting that healthcare should get changed for the good, thats a polite and easy statement to understand and it doesn't do anyharm it does more good than bad. Thats what i think about protesters. If they are going to protest make sure its gonna do a good thing for the country. Make sure it doesn't more bad than good

I think these protests hurt the health care debate. I think that no matter how much they protest it is not going to change the way that people feel about the health care situation. I agree with Elyse she says that people are just disrespecting President Obama. I think that it is hurting the Obama administration because when you call anyone a liar people start to doubt you especially when they have called you a liar repeatedly. I also think that the protests will not change the Obama Administrations minds because this is something that they have wanted for a very long time. The health care issue has been going on for so many years. They are finally realizing that they can no longer push the health care issue back. In the end I think that the protests are just hurting the people not the decisions of the congress.

For what I see more than helping all this protests are hurting the heal care reform. They are making more difficult the job of Obama and his cabinet. And at the same time they are trying to get money out all this issue as picture 4 shows. On my opinion the only thing this people are doing is making it last longer. I don't get why is so much drama they vote for Obama I know they have the right to protest. For me they are not letting Obama his job. I think Obama is just trying to look for a solution for what America is now passing the depression. I think they should trust a little more what they decide it was better for they country. They should star thinking is all this helping or hurting my country. For me all this is nothing more than an obstacle Obama has to pass.

With the photos I have seen and the information given I place my statement that the Tea Party Protests are hurting the American debate. Although there is many people involved in this ( a reference to picture #2 in the article) what help is it? With signs and posters made such as the ones on page #5 is truly a shame to have. With the sign saying “Obama Bin Lyin’ “ making a comparison to the terrorist leader Osama Bin Laden showing the faith people have in our president now. Another picture shown of signs made by the tea party that angers me is the spread of Obama being a Communist and having healthcare rumors grow larger. If Obama stated that the “death panel” rumor was a myth and not going to happen, yet with this tea party the rumor seems only to grow. With this ignorance ruining others faith and gaining a larger protest that could even lead to an impeachment is like a disease destroying our country. Even this ignorance passing down to the youth which should have a larger support in Obama, but sadly that is changing. A perfect example in this would be on page #9 in the article which has a picture of a young adult holding a sign that says “you lie” with the Obama symbol. An important issue that hits a large number of people in my opinion would be the citizens that have religion importance. Again perfect examples would be page 10 and 6 showing how “God” and “religion” hold higher to them then government. Religion and government do not belong in the same pot, however people using religion as an excuse for impeachment goes back to the “disease” theory. To conclude my statement I believe that most of these protest are not only stupid, pointless, and a waste but that if people put this much energy to complain why don’t they help try to get this country better and still support our president? Is that really hard to support a different party?

The signs I saw people holding in the pictures from TIME seem to be a bit to much to say about Obama. I think protests like these are doing nothing but tearing out nation apart. How can they degrade the president so much with all his ideas if nothing has actually gone into effect. There has been no real chance given yet to see if his reforms will work. To belittle the president wont get us anywhere with healthcare and economical issues. It seems as if the media and people with the power to change things are being distracted by these protests and what not. It is taking eyes off the actual debates and taking a route into a childish manner. Our country needs to come together and actually try to make these plans work

After looking at the posters from the protesters, I would say that it does not help the healthcare debate. Everyone has a right to protest, but it seems like some are just throughing insults at Obama. For example, the one saying "Obama Bin Lyin'" is saying that hes like Osama bin laden. Other posters are referencing Obama to a communist. I dont think that just throwing insults at the president is helping. I think that if you are prtotesting, whatever it may be which is healthcare in this case, that you should be allowed to but within reason. But then again everyone is entitled to thier own opinion and if this is what they think of Obama and his healthcare plan then no one can stop them from thinking what they think. So I dont think it helps the healthcare debate at all but just add "fuel to the flame" so to speak.

In my point of view, The Tea Party protests is the most common way for right-wing conservatives to fight against Obama.
It is obvious that this "campaign" is hurting Obama and the healthcare plan; because the media is potraying it towards the public throughout these photrographs. All in which are a major part of rationalizing the american society towards questioning their standpoint within the confusion throughout this debate.
Yes, the media is showing these radical right-wing beliefs; but why don't they show us the "good" things about the healthcare plan? The media is creting a bisased perspective about the health care debate. People would completetly ignore these radicals, if they were not over exaggerated throughout the news.
I think that it all has to do with choosing to adapt towards the brainwash that is being showed all over our country. People will come up with their own individual opinion about the health care debate as long as they do not limit their facts based on whats being potrayed in television.

i dont think we are hurting the health care plan because some people want health care and some people dont. and people dont want the government to take over the health care plan.

i think that the protests are affecting Obama's reputation what caught the most my attention was picture number three that says "if you can't pay the bill get off the hill" what i understand in that poster is that people is thinking that Obama is not doing a good job that if he can't fix the economy that its better for him to gie up precidency raher than to continue doing other things. Also picure number eight that says "stop the war" people are waiting for Obama to stop the war because he promised to do it but he hasn't done it yet and i think people should wait a little bit more because he hasn't even been in the precidency for one year. in picture number two there's a poster that says " don't spend my wealth" i think that's about what Obama wants to do about raising the taxes on people who earn more money people is not agreeing with that all this things are affecting Obama and all the plans that he has.

I definatly think that it is affecting a lot of issues and conserns that are happening right now. I do not think that it is the best time to be protesting these things. It is definatly hurting his Health Care reform because a lot of people are already not sure about him so these protests make it even worse. Actually i think that the pictures these protesters and the comments that they write are so immature. Especially the pictures of Obama as a clown, ect. It is also is immature comparing him to Osama Bin Laden. These protester are definatly making a diffrence to the opinions of other people. The people that are not sure of weather to support Obama or not are now definatly against him.

I think the tea parties protests are hurting the American debate on health care and other issues. People should let Obama handle the problem and encourage him. Not go against him, it will just make things worse. If the people really want to help they should stop protesting. They should give it more time, for great things to happen you must be patient. My opinion this health care reform will help Americans and people will realize it wouldn’t be bad thing after all. if you’re going to protest against health care reform you shouldn’t go out of hand. Such as, cruel pictures about our President Obama.
